Ansaar India: Getting marriage certificate from Local Wakf board

Bismillah Ar-Rahmaan Ar-Raheem

As salaamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu brothers & sisters in faith,
this post is to assist you in obtaining your marriage certificate from the local wakf board. The process is quiet simple & the documents required to be submitted include,

  • Nikaah naama issued from the masjid
  • A letter from the masjid (which basically states that nikaah was conducted by the concerned authorities on the specified date)
  • Joint affidavit (this would require a joint photograph with your spouse)
  • 3 joint photographs
  • Application requesting to issue marriage certificate
A fee of Rs.1000/- is charged by the local wakf board to issue the marriage certificate.

Hope you find this post useful. May Allah make it easy for us & accept it from us.

Wa salaam,
Abdullah Raj (Sundeep)

  2. one question brother -

Does a marriage certificate from wakf board suffice or a marriage certificate from the any other government authority for marriage is required(maybe, from the department of marriages and divorces of the state government) also is required?

    Jazakallah for the answer.

  3. Dear brother in islam, in general the marriage certificate is issued by registrar for marriages, exception being for muslims (dont ask me why :)...I found that local wakf board is authorized to give the same...& this is accepted @ all govt.offices.

  4. Salamu Alaikum, my husband and I need a muslim marriage registration certificate issued by the Qazi, Mufti, OR WAQF BOARD. We have no idea where to get that from. Our Qazi doesn't issue anything like that. Does anybody know where to apply for the registration in Delhi in shaa Allah?

    1. Wa alaikum assalaam sister, if you are from India, the marriage certificate is issued by the local Waqf board & this is acceptable by Govt. agencies. The Delhi Wakf board is located in Darya Ganj. You may walk in directly & apply for marriage certificate, for which typically few documents are required, that are listed in this blog entry...

  5. Jazakallah khair Brother! You have helped us a lot. The problem is that my husband is a foreigner himself in India and I live in Germany. Nobody could give us any information concerning this registration. My husband will go to the Waqf board as soon as possible in shaa Allah.I hope that this way will work out in shaa Allah, his visa might be dependent from that piece of paper...

  6. Salamu Alaikum, just as an update I would like to tell you that my husband went to that Wakf Board. But they told him that the Indian government has not given them the authority yet to register a marriage. The topic has been beeing discussed for some time in India, but until now without any result. I don t know if the marriage registration and the marriage certificate are the same, but just in case that anyone wants to get his marriage registered in the Wakf Board, he should know that until now its not possible. We have found a Mufti now to register our marriage in shaa Allah :)

  10. Assalam u alaikum brother

My question is that while applying for the WAKF marriage certificate, are husband and wife both needed to be physically present in the office for signature? or can it be done by only husband's presence?

    1. WA alaikum assalam typically both are expected to be physically present but ofcourse it depends on if there's a valid (according to official in ur respective wakf board) excuse or some contacts who can help.

  11. Assalam u alaikum brother
i am from bareilly up and my husband s from hyderabad and resides in saudi.
we have nikahnama issued by qazi (urdu and english copy both).
i need visa for saudi and the govt. of saudi asked for the marriage certificate.
is that nikahnama work for the same?
or we have to issue the same from some other place? but my husband got back to the saudi.
kindly guide for the same with proper elaboration.
    i would highly thankful.

    1. Wa alaikum assalam sister, pls apply for a marriage certificate at the local wakf board (preferably depending where the nikaah was conducted), as nikahnama is NOT an official document issued by Govt of India. Once marriage certificate is issued, this should be suffice for all purposes insha Allah.
